School Introduction:
Shrewsbury School is one of the oldest and most distinguished private boarding schools in the UK, founded in 1552 by Royal Charter of King Edward VI. It is situated in the historic market town of Shrewsbury, on a 110-acre riverside campus overlooking the River Severn in Shropshire.
Originally a boys' school, Shrewsbury became fully co-educational in 2015.
Today, it accommodates approximately 840 pupils, with about 85% boarding. The school features 12 boarding houses—7 for boys and 5 for girls—and offers a strong sense of community and pastoral support.
The school is celebrated for its academic rigour, with students consistently achieving outstanding A-Level and GCSE results. Many pupils secure places at top universities in the UK and abroad, including Oxbridge and the G5 group. Beyond academics, Shrewsbury School promotes holistic education, excelling in sports, music, arts, and drama. Its exceptional facilities include extensive playing fields, a boathouse for rowing, and a state-of-the-art music school and theatre.
Shrewsbury has a distinguished list of alumni, most famously Charles Darwin. Other notable Old Salopians include actor and comedian Michael Palin and former UK Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine. The school continues to uphold a strong reputation for developing well-rounded, curious, and confident individuals.
